Ruff Furniture is one of the oldest family businesses in South Carolina. John Ruff, the current owner, is the 6th generation of Ruffs to run the family business. The business began around 1840 by John’s great-great-great-great-uncle, David Ruff, as a general store supplying every need for the residents of our little town of Ridgeway. The original store stands today across the street from the current store. It serves as a warehouse now, but still holds many treasures from years ago. The store has evolved in many ways since 1840 and has faced many challenges. It is said to have been used to hide ammunition from invading Yankee soldiers during the War Between the States. Munitions were hidden in salt pork barrels underneath the store when Gen. Beauregard headquartered his troops in Ridgeway in retreat from Sherman’s army in Columbia.
As a bachelor, Uncle David helped to care for his young nephews in town and eventually brought them into the business as they grew older. As partnerships changed, so did the name. The store has been known as Ruff and Lawhorn, Ruff and Ruff, Ruff & Cloud, A.F. Ruff & Co., Ruff Mercantile, and Ruff & Co. Around the 1890’s, John’s great-grandfather began to manage the store. He and his brother expanded the business by opening the “new” building next door in 1901. John’s grandfather joined the business after serving in the army in World War I. Walter Ruff, John’s father joined the family business after his tour in World War II. John, the current owner, joined his father and brother, Dan, after graduating from college in 1983. Through all these changes, the store has adapted to the needs of the community. From being a one-stop shop for bacon, coffee, and fertilizer as well as a cotton gin, it eventually evolved into a hardware and furniture store. In 2002, brothers John and Dan divided the two sides of the business into separate furniture and hardware stores.
Although furniture has always been sold at the store, it became a major focus under Walter Ruff, John’s father, in the 1970’s. Walter Ruff always stressed the importance of quality furniture and set the standard that is followed today. His love of people and lovable personality are remembered by many people even today who bought their first furniture from him. Our family has always treasured our history and values the timelessness of fine merchandise. Many people consider their purchases from Ruff Furniture to be family heirlooms. We think you’ll find treasures for your family here too.
